The Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office (Toronto) (HKETO) supported two Cantonese opera performances presented by the Starlight Chinese Opera Performing Arts Centre (the Starlight) at the Flato Markham Theatre on July 19 and 20.
Attending the opening ceremony, Acting Director of the HKETO, Mr Gavin Yeung, noted that Cantonese opera is a world-class intangible cultural heritage and a symbol of rich traditional culture and art in Hong Kong. It was officially inscribed onto the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2009.
Mr Yeung further remarked that the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government is committed to developing Hong Kong into an East-meets-West hub for international cultural exchange. The facilities at the West Kowloon Cultural District including the Xiqu Centre offer world-class performance venues, museums, and a wide array of arts and cultural programmes. Recognised as Asia’s world city and an events capital, Hong Kong hosts a year-round calendar of premier arts, cultural, and mega sporting events, and is the key destination for international conferences, exhibitions and trade fairs.
To promote cultural exchange between Hong Kong and Canada, four Cantonese opera artists from Hong Kong participated in the performances, including the classic repertoire of “the Romance of the Phoenix Tower” and the programme of the “Little Starlets Shine with Starlight 2025”.
