The Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office in Toronto (HKETO) hosted a networking event on November 4 to welcome a delegation from the Law Society of Hong Kong (Law Society), led by its Vice-President, Mr Christopher Yu, during their visit to Toronto to attend the International Bar Association (IBA) Annual Conference 2025. The event, bringing together legal professionals, business leaders and government representatives from Hong Kong, Canada and other jurisdictions, provided an opportunity for professional exchange and collaboration among the legal communities.
Delivering an opening remark at the event, the Acting Director of the HKETO in Toronto, Mr Gavin Yeung, commended the Law Society for its efforts in promoting Hong Kong’s legal services and professional excellence on the international stage. He noted that Hong Kong’s robust legal framework continues to be well recognised in the world.
“The rule of law and judicial independence are the cornerstone of Hong Kong’s success,” he said. “Hong Kong’s common law system, coupled with a strong tradition of judicial professionalism, ensures that businesses can continue to operate in a stable legal environment. This strength has long supported our role as a leading international business and financial centre.”
Mr Yeung also emphasised Hong Kong’s role as the only common law jurisdiction within China, uniquely positioned to bridge Chinese Mainland and the rest of the world. “With our internationally aligned legal system, world-class dispute resolution services, and connectivity with Chinese Mainland, Hong Kong remains a vital ‘super-connector’ in the global economy,” he added.
Meanwhile, Mr Yu shared with the attendees the latest legal developments in Hong Kong and presented a comprehensive account of Hong Kong’s legal landscape.
The IBA Annual Conference is one of the most prominent events on the global legal calendar, attracting legal organisations, practitioners and scholars from around the world. The Law Society delegation’s visit to Toronto showcased Hong Kong’s ongoing commitment to strengthening international legal cooperation and deepening mutual understanding with its international counterparts.
香港經貿處歡迎香港律師會代表團到訪
香港駐多倫多經濟貿易辦事處（香港經貿處）於十一月四日舉辦交流活動，歡迎由香港律師會副會長余國堅律師率領的代表團到訪多倫多出席二○二五年度國際律師協會年會。是次活動匯聚來自香港、加拿大及其他司法管轄區的法律界專業人士、商界領袖及政府代表，為法律界提供專業交流與合作的機會。
香港經貿處署理處長楊江鋒在活動上致辭，讚揚香港律師會致力於國際舞台上推廣香港的法律服務及專業成就。他指出，香港穩健的法律制度向來備受國際肯定。
他表示：「法治和司法獨立是香港成功的基石。香港的普通法制度和司法專業確保企業能在穩定的法律環境中運作。這項優勢乃香港作為國際商業及金融中心的支柱。」
楊江鋒指出，香港作為中國境內唯一奉行普通法的司法管轄區，在聯通內地與世界方面獨具優勢。他補充說：「憑藉與國際接軌的法律制度、世界一流的調解服務，以及與內地緊密的聯繫，香港繼續在全球經濟中擔當重要的『超級聯繫人』角色。」
另一方面，余國堅律師亦向與會者分享香港最新的法律發展，並詳細介紹香港的法律制度及其優勢。
國際律師協會年會是全球法律界最具影響力的盛事之一，吸引世界各地的法律機構、執業律師及學者參與。香港律師會代表團是次訪問多倫多，展示香港致力推動國際法律合作及加深與各地法律界相互了解。
