HKETO encourages young Canadian entrepreneurs to grasp development opportunities in Hong Kong

The Acting Director of the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office (Toronto) (HKETO), Mr Gavin Yeung, attended the “PowerUp Pitch Competition: Gateway to Asia via Hong Kong” hosted by PULSE committee of the Hong Kong-Canada Business Association (Toronto Chapter) on October 3. Supported by the Hong Kong Trade Development Council, HKETO and Invest Hong Kong in Canada, the competition served as a platform for Canadian startups to showcase their innovative business ideas, competing for valuable prizes and growth opportunities in Hong Kong and beyond.

In his opening remarks, Mr Yeung highlighted Hong Kong’s continued global leadership in education, innovation and technology (I&T), and talent attraction, as reflected in the World Talent Ranking 2025 and the Global Innovation Index 2025. “As a key player in the world’s leading innovation cluster, Asia’s venture capital hub and a rising global destination for top talent, Hong Kong remains one of the most competitive economies, operating under the principle of ‘one country, two systems’,” he said.

Mr Yeung also noted that Hong Kong maintains its sound legal and regulatory systems, along with a wide range of talent attraction schemes. “Hong Kong is well positioned to serve as both a ‘super-connector’ and ‘super value-adder’ between the Chinese Mainland and the rest of the world,” he added.

Mr Yeung further emphasised the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government’s commitment to fostering high value-added manufacturing through I&T, and promoting new industrialisation. “Young professionals in Hong Kong enjoy attractive remuneration packages, career advancement opportunities, and exposure to international companies and global markets,” he remarked.

He encouraged young Canadian entrepreneurs to grasp the vast opportunities and consider Hong Kong as a base to build their careers and businesses.

The Pitch Competition featured 30 startups from Toronto in sectors including HealthTech, FinTech, and GreenTech. The winning team received a prize package comprising a round-trip ticket to Hong Kong sponsored by Cathay Pacific, as well as nominations to the Hong Kong Science and Technology Parks Incubation Programme and the Hong Kong Cyberport Incubation Programme.
