HKETO Director attends CGTCBA’s 24th Annual Gala

Director of the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office (Toronto), Ms Emily Mo, attended the 24th Annual Gala hosted by the Confederation of Greater Toronto Chinese Business Association on May 28.

Speaking at the gala dinner, Ms Mo complimented the four major Chinese business associations in the Greater Toronto Area in supporting and assisting the local business companies to use Hong Kong as a platform to capture opportunities in Mainland China and the rest of Asia.

Year 2022 marks an important milestone for Hong Kong as the city is celebrating the 25th anniversary of the establishment of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region. “The theme of ‘A New Era – Stability • Prosperity • Opportunity’ represents Hong Kong’s achievements over the past 25 years, and underscores our anticipation for and confidence in a brighter future,” Ms Mo said.

“With the staunch support from the Central Government, Hong Kong has successfully implemented ‘one country, two systems’ while sustaining its role as an international metropolis,” Ms Mo continued.

Ms Mo moved on to share with participants the latest achievements of Hong Kong. “The number of business operations in Hong Kong with parent companies overseas or in the Mainland China has risen to over 9 000 and the number of start-ups in Hong Kong has increased to over 3 700 in 2021, both reaching record highs. The IMD World Talent Ranking 2021 ranked Hong Kong number 1 in Asia, 11th in the world, while the World Investment Report 2021 ranked Hong Kong the world’s third-largest recipient of foreign direct investment last year,” Ms Mo said.

Noting Hong Kong continues to be a top international financial market, and continues to have a distinct relationship with Canada, the city remains one of Canada’s top ten trading markets in the past decade.

Ms Mo pointed out that Hong Kong is playing an increasingly significant role as a platform for doing business in Asia and Indo-Pacific, including the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area. She encouraged Canada companies to consider using Hong Kong as a platform to expand, to thrive and to shine in the fastest growing market on the East.

Before closing, Ms Mo briefly introduced the series of celebration activities, including a business conference to be held in September. Ms Mo invited participants to join the celebration events and encouraged them to learn more from HKETO’s website.
