HKETO deepens youth engagement through summer internship programme

University students from Hong Kong participated in a series of business events, cultural and educational activities in Ontario under the summer internship programme of the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office (Toronto) (HKETO) this year to gain international career exposure and foster cross-cultural exchanges.

The Acting Director of the HKETO, Mr Gavin Yeung, said on July 31 that that the HKETO is committed to cultivating global perspectives among Hong Kong students by offering internship opportunities in Canada.

During the programme that lasted from June to July, the interns were offered opportunities to take part in various business seminars, networking events and company visits organised by the HKETO, Invest Hong Kong in Canada and other business partners to promote Hong Kong’s unique advantages to the Canadian business sector.

The HKETO also facilitated academic visits to prominent institutions, including the University of Toronto’s downtown campus, the York University, and the Ivey Business School at the University of Western Ontario in London. These visits offered firsthand exposure to Canada’s academic excellence, and highlighted the strong academic links between Canadian and Hong Kong scholarly communities.

In addition, the interns also engaged in cultural and community projects, and gained insights into the cross-cultural landscape in Canada.  A special guided tour to Queen’s Park, the seat of Ontario’s Legislative Assembly, also provided the interns with insights into the province’s political structure and legislative process.

“HKETO strives to create impactful learning experiences that equip Hong Kong’s next generation with the global awareness necessary to navigate an interconnected world,” Mr Yeung added. “These activities not only strengthen educational and cultural ties between Hong Kong and Canada, but also build the mutual bridges through youth engagement.”
