HKETO Director visits Calgary

Director of the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office (Toronto) (HKETO), Ms Emily Mo, visited Calgary from October 27 to 28 to strengthen Hong Kong’s relations with the Province of Alberta and to promote Hong Kong as the ideal platform for Canadian companies to tap on the markets in Asia and beyond.

Upon arrival on October 27, Ms Mo held a lunch meeting with Mr Ron Hoffmann, Vice President, Business Development of Fluid Energy Group Ltd. and a former Canadian diplomat, to exchange views with him on how to foster collaboration to strengthen the trade relations between Alberta and Hong Kong.  She then had a meeting with the President and Chief Executive Officer of Calgary Chamber of Commerce, Ms Deborah Yedlin, to exchange views on promotion of trades and businesses between the City of Calgary and Hong Kong, particularly on the information and technology, clean technology, clean energy and healthcare sectors.

In the evening, Ms Mo attended the Hong Kong-Canada Business Association (HKCBA) Calgary Section’s networking reception entitled “A New Era: Succeeding in Asia and Beyond through Hong Kong” and delivered a speech.  She updated the attendees that Hong Kong has been maintaining its status as the top international financial market and continued to be the freest economy in the world.

“Even during the pandemic, the number of business operations in Hong Kong with parent companies overseas or in the Mainland China rose to over 9 000 and the number of start-ups increased to over 3 700 in 2021, both reaching record highs,” Ms Mo said.

Looking forward, Ms Mo remarked that Hong Kong is poised to enter a new era opportunities as the city further integrates into the national development, including the 14th Five-Year Plan and the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area Development.

Before closing, Ms Mo invited participants to visit Hong Kong in order to learn more about how Canadian companies can tap the vast opportunities presented by the rapid-growing Asia market through Hong Kong.

On October 28, Ms Mo paid a visit to a team of Hong Kong curlers at a pre-competition training session at the Glencoe Club. The team will compete in the Pan-Continental Curling Championships to be held in Calgary from October 31 to November 6.

Ms Mo returned to Toronto in the afternoon of October 28.
