HKETO Director visits Calgary for business promotion

Director of the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office (Toronto) (HKETO), Ms Emily Mo visited Calgary from November 27 to 28 to promote Hong Kong as the best gateway to business opportunities in Mainland China and the rest of Asia.

In delivering a speech at the "Best of Best Competition for Hong Kong Startup Zone" organised by the Hong Kong-Canada Business Association (Calgary Section) on November 27, Ms Mo first introduced the vibrant start-up scene in Hong Kong.  “The 2019 Annual Startup Survey by Invest Hong Kong found that there were 3 184 start-ups operating in Hong Kong, meaning a 42.8 per cent increase from 2017.  These start-ups employed over 12 400 persons, an increase of 97.4 per cent over the 2017 figure,” she said.

“The start-up community in Hong Kong is highly international, and of the founders, 34 per cent were from outside Hong Kong, of whom the US has the largest share (15.4 per cent), followed by Mainland China (14.0 per cent), whereas Canada ranked the eighth (3 percent),” she continued.

As Hong Kong’s start-up ecosystem has been making great strides with relevant investment reaching US$720million in 2019, Ms Mo welcome start-ups in Calgary that are looking for medium-and-long-term new opportunities to consider using Hong Kong as their springboards to access the Asian market.

Before closing, Ms Mo talked about the latest situation in Hong Kong and remarked that the city remained a safe, open and welcoming cosmopolitan city. “Although the social unrest in recent months has had a dampening effect on investment sentiment in Hong Kong, the fundamentals and institutional underpinning Hong Kong’s economy and society are strong,” she said.

During the visit, Ms Mo paid a courtesy call on Calgary Mayor Naheed Nenshi.  She briefed him on the latest developments in Hong Kong and exchanged views with him on issues with mutual interests.

Ms Mo returned to Toronto on November 28.
