The 31st Toronto International Dragon Boat Race Festival (the Festival), organised by the Toronto Chinese Business Association in collaboration with GWN Dragon Boat, was held on the Centre Island in Toronto on June 15 and 16. The Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office in Toronto (HKETO) is a key sponsor of the Festival.
Speaking at the opening ceremony of the Festival, Director of HKETO, Ms Emily Mo, congratulated the Festival on its 31st year anniversary. Ms Mo is glad to see that dragon boat racing, which was originated from Hong Kong, has developed roots across Canada.
“We brought the race to Canada three decades ago, and promoted this exciting sport to the world. This wonderful event shows the strong and close ties between Hong Kong and Canada. It is also our honour to welcome over 5 000 athletes from Canada and other parts of the world in these two-day event,” Ms Mo said.
Ms Mo noted that HKETO has been sponsoring dragon boat racing in different cities across Canada. She encouraged visitors to visit the Hong Kong pavilion where they can learn more about the history of dragon boating and also take pictures in front of images that showcase Hong Kong’s connectivity to the world.
