Director of the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office (Toronto) (HKETO), Miss Kathy Chan, attended the Lunar New Year Celebration of Air Canada on January 30 in Toronto.
Speaking at the New Year Celebration, Miss Chan first noted the close human ties between Hong Kong and Canada. “According to statistics, there are currently 300 000 Canadian passport holders in Hong Kong, while there are around 500 000 Hong Kong immigrants in different parts of Canada,” she said. To maintain bonds, personal travel between Hong Kong and Canada has been frequent.
In addition, trade relations also contributed to the frequent people and cargo flows between the two places. Miss Chan said that Hong Kong has been Canada’s eighth largest merchandise export market, which sustained a high demand for cargo business. At the same time, business travel has become more common as more and more Canadian companies, including start-ups, set their foot in Hong Kong.
Apart from trade, Hong Kong is a famous tourism destination which attracts many Canadian tourists each year. “The Hong Kong Special Administrative Region government has made substantial efforts to develop the city into a world-class premier tourism destination and has continually added new attractions and tourism facilities to make the travelling experience to Hong Kong more diverse,” she said.
Noting 2018 is the Canada-China Year of Tourism, Miss Chan encouraged Canadian travellers to include Hong Kong as one of their destinations when visiting China. Miss Chan said, “In fact, travelling between Hong Kong and other parts of China would never be easier starting later this year, when two important cross-border transportation projects would be commissioned.” She said the Guangzhou-Shenzhen-Hong Kong Express Rail Link would shorten the travelling time between Hong Kong and Guangzhou from the present 2 hours to 50 minutes, while the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge would shorten the travelling time from Zhuhai to Hong Kong Airport from the existing 4 hours to 45 minutes.
Before closing, Miss Chan took the opportunity to wish all the guests a prosperous and happy Year of the Dog.
