The Richard Charles Lee Canada-Hong Kong Library of the University of Toronto organised a seminar on June 19 to discuss the writing of Cantonese lyrics for songs and musicals in Hong Kong. The Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office (Toronto) (HKETO) is a sponsor of the seminar.

At this seminar entitled “Lyric Composition for Cantonese Songs and Musicals”, an award-winning lyricist in Hong Kong, Mr Chris Shum, spoke on his lyrics writing journey and how his life experiences over the years contribute to this creative process. Mr Chris Shum has been recognised for his lyrics for many of Hong Kong’s theatrical, television, and movie productions. He is also the recipient of the Best Original Song Awards of the Hong Kong Film Awards and the Taiwan Golden Horse Awards.

At the opening of the seminar, Director of HKETO, Miss Kathy Chan, said that the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government is committed to advancing the city as an international cosmopolitan of arts and culture.  “Hong Kong is pushing ahead with the development of the West Kowloon Cultural District, one of the largest cultural projects in the world which will include a number of museums and world-class performing arts venues.  The district would host performances staged by local arts groups and visiting arts troupes, and display exquisite art collections sourced from different parts of the world.  The project would greatly enrich the cultural life of the people of Hong Kong,” Miss Chan said.

Professor Jessica Tsui-yan Li from the Department of Languages, Literatures and Linguistics of York University also spoke at the seminar as a discussant.  Born and raised in Hong Kong, she shared with participants her insights into the culture of Hong Kong as expressed in songs.
