Director of the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office (Toronto), Miss Kathy Chan, attended HSBC Bank Canada’s Lunar New Year Gala Dinner on February 20 in Toronto.
Speaking at the gala dinner, Miss Chan first congratulated HSBC on being recognised by Euromoney as the world’s best bank in 2017. “With Hong Kong being the birthplace of HSBC more than 150 years ago, I am proud of HSBC’s achievement,” she said.
With HSBC being a global bank committed to financing cross-border trade and capital flows, Miss Chan is delighted to note that Hong Kong and Canada bilateral trade continued to flourish. “Hong Kong is Canada’s eighth largest merchandise export market. In addition, we are encouraged to see more and more Canadian companies, including start-ups, setting up in Hong Kong and making use of the Hong Kong platform to launch into the massive markets of Mainland China and the rest of Asia,” she said.
Miss Chan went on to brief the audience on the latest economic situation of Hong Kong. In particular, she mentioned that the US-based Heritage Foundation has recently once again rated Hong Kong as the world’s freest economy for the 24th consecutive year. Hong Kong also continued to be one of the world’s top three international financial centres after London and New York.
On external trade relations, Miss Chan said Hong Kong has also made significant progress. “Last November, we signed a free trade agreement with the 10-member Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN). When the agreement comes into force, Canadian companies can also enjoy the facilitation measures under the agreement to tap into the fast-growing AESAN market if they partner with Hong Kong or use Hong Kong as a base,” Miss Chan said. She hoped to see more and more Canadian investments in Hong Kong.
Miss Chan also took the opportunity to wish the guests all the best in the Year of the Dog.
