Hong Kong-based performing group, Chung Ying Theatre Company (Chung Ying), staged its opening night performance of “Tuesdays with Morrie” at the Gateway Theatre in Vancouver on August 31. The performance is part of the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office in Toronto (HKETO)’s programme to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the establishment of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) in Canada.
“To celebrate this special occasion, HKETO has organized and supported a series of events across the country to share the joy with our friends in Canada,” Principal Consultant (Western Canada) of HKETO, Ms. Catherine Yuen, spoke before the opening night performance. “It is against this background that we sponsored Chung Ying to visit Vancouver once again to present one of its masterpieces – ‘Tuesdays with Morrie’ to the local audience, with the aim of further facilitating cultural exchanges between Hong Kong and Canada.”
Ms Yuen also remarked that apart from being an international financial and trade centre, Hong Kong is also a cosmopolitan centre for arts and culture. “Apart from our home-grown talents, we invite arts groups from all around the world to stage performances and exhibitions in Hong Kong throughout the year. In gist, we are proud to present a sumptuous arts and cultural feast to our audience, with genres ranging from the West to the East, from the traditional to modern and even avant-garde ones. There will always be something that suits your taste,” Ms Yuen said.
“Tuesdays with Morrie”, a play resonating with audiences over the years, showcased its 23th global run in Vancouver. This is the third time Chung Ying’s Artistic Director Ko Tin Lung teams up with Edmond Lo, Assistant Artistic Director and Mitch the first generation, to present the drama to the audience.
A post-reception was held after the opening night performance. Other activities by Chung Ying in Vancouver include the “Meet-the-Artists” public seminar at the Gateway Theatre on September 1, and the closing performance of “Tuesdays with Morrie” on September 2.
