HKSAR 20th anniversary seminar series continues

Posted in: Press Releases

September 29, 2017

The fourth seminar of the seminar series on Hong Kong, organised by the Richard Charles Lee Canada-Hong Kong Library throughout 2017 to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the establishment of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, is held on September 29 with a discussion on the Eurasians’ dual heritage in Hong Kong.

At this seminar entitled “East Meets West: Eurasians and Hong Kong”, distinguished speakers, including Honourable Dr Vivienne Poy, Chancellor Emerita of the University of Toronto and retired Senator of Canada, Professor Emma Teng of MIT, and Professor Lisa Mar of University of Toronto, shared with participants the history and life of Eurasians in Hong Kong.

The seminar started with Dr Jack Leong, Director of the Richard Charles Lee Canada-Hong Kong Library with an introduction on the origin of Eurasians in Hong Kong.  The speakers then moved on with an enlightening discussion on insights into Eurasians’ dual heritage and how Eurasians’ life and status in Hong Kong society had evolved in recent decades.  A third generation Hong Kong Eurasian was also present to share his stories.

The first three seminars of the series, on poetry related to Hong Kong, economic development of Hong Kong and Cantonese opera accompaniment, were held in January, April and June this year respectively. This seminar series will continue in the coming months with more Hong Kong-related topics to enable the Canadian public to better understand the different aspects about Hong Kong and foster the relations between Hong Kong and Canada.
