HKETO Deputy Director attends the Toronto International Dragon Boat Race Festival

Posted in: Press Releases

September 9, 2017

The 29th Toronto International Dragon Boat Race Festival (the Festival) organized by the Toronto Chinese Business Association was held at the Marilyn Bell Park in Toronto on September 9 and 10.  The Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office in Toronto (HKETO) is a special sponsor of the event.

Speaking at the opening ceremony, Deputy Director of HKETO, Mr Nick Choi, said that HKETO has long been promoting and sponsoring dragon boat events in different cities across Canada.  “Hong Kong is the birth place of modern dragon boat racing.  We hosted the first international dragon boat race four decades ago and subsequently introduced this exciting water sport to Canada at the 1986 World Expo in Vancouver.  We are glad to see that dragon boat racing has developed its roots in Canada and grown into a sport that is loved by so many people,” said Mr Choi.

Mr Choi added that apart from the exciting competitions, the event as a whole offers lots of fun for people of different ages, cultures and backgrounds. It is also a celebration of the great friendship between Hong Kong and Canada.

“Over the years, many Canadian dragon boat teams have gone to Hong Kong to participate in our annual Dragon Boat Carnival held in the beautiful Victoria Harbour.  It is a testimony of the strong and close ties between Hong Kong and Canada,” Mr Choi remarked.

HKETO is pleased to be the special sponsor of the Toronto International Dragon Boat Race Festival this year to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the establishment of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region.  The 20th Anniversary Hong Kong Cup is presented to the winning team at the event.  Besides, HKETO has set up an information booth where visitors can learn more about the Tuen Ng Festival and some interesting facts about dragon boating.
