The Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office (Toronto) (HKETO) sponsors “Loving Hong Kong with Canadian Hearts” exhibition and gala organised by the Hong Kong Canadians on Hong Kong Situation Association to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the establishment of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR). This event held on July 15 featured a variety of activities with Hong Kong theme such as exhibition of old Hong Kong photos and tasting of Hong Kong street food, as well as a gala dinner menu with Hong Kong style specialty food like "Poon Choi".

Speaking at the opening ceremony of the exhibition cum gala dinner, Director of HKETO, Miss Kathy Chan, first featured the close ties between Hong Kong and Canada. “There are around 500 000 Hong Kong people in Canada and around 300 000 Canadian passport holders in Hong Kong,” she said.

“Though they are far away from their origin, many Hong Kong people who have emigrated to Canada are still very concerned about what is happening in Hong Kong,” she continued. Miss Chan noted it was because of this care towards and bonding with Hong Kong that the Association was established. The event organised by the Association has enabled Hong Kong people in Vancouver to gather together to share the happiness on the occasion of the 20th anniversary of the HKSAR.

Miss Chan said the theme of 20th anniversary celebrations of the HKSAR Government is “Together, Progress, Opportunity”. In giving a brief review of Hong Kong in the past 20 years, Miss Chan said “Hong Kong has ridden through many challenges during the past 20 years. But Hong Kong people have stayed together to overcome these challenges.” Miss Chan was also thankful to the Chinese government’s staunch support at various crucial moments.

“While Hong Kong has made enormous economic and social progress during the past two decades, we would not be complacent. We would make good use of the abundant opportunities available to us, including those opportunities brought about by the continuous development of our country, to create an even brighter future for Asia’s world city, Hong Kong,” Miss Chan added.
