Hong Kong-based performing group, Chung Ying Theatre Company (Chung Ying), will present drama performances of “Tuesdays with Morrie” at the Gateway Theatre in Vancouver from August 31 to September 2.  The performances are part of the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office in Toronto (HKETO)’s programme to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the establishment of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region in Canada with the aim of facilitating cultural exchanges between Hong Kong and Canada.

“Tuesdays with Morrie”, a play resonating with audiences over the years and becoming one of the masterpieces in the Hong Kong theatre, was invited to showcase its 23th global run in Vancouver again after its Toronto and Vancouver premieres in 2014 and 2015 respectively.    Chung Ying’s Artistic Director Ko Tin Lung will take on the role of Professor Morrie while self-directing, to pass on the life lessons along with Edmond Lo, Assistant Artistic Director and Mitch the first generation.

“Tuesdays with Morrie” is the autobiographical story of Mitch Albom. Sixteen years after graduation, Mitch happens to catch Morrie’s appearance on a television news programme and learns that his old professor is battling a terminal illness. Mitch is reunited with Morrie, and what starts as a simple visit turns into a weekly pilgrimage and a last class in the meaning of life.

“The performance of the American memoir ‘Tuesdays with Morrie’ by Chung Ying, infused with Hong Kong favour and delivered in Cantonese with English and Chinese subtitles, is a unique blend of Eastern and Western cultures.  It will enable the audience in Vancouver to appreciate the beauty of Hong Kong culture and performing arts, and further facilitate the cultural exchanges between Hong Kong and Canada,” Acting Director of HKETO, Mr Nick Choi said.

Since its premiere in 2007, the play has toured nine cities around the world with over 150 shows.  Countless awards have been received by the performance over the past ten years.  This is the third time Mr Ko and Mr Lo team up and present the drama to the audience.
