Posted in: Press Releases

June 30, 2017

Deputy Director of the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office (Toronto) (HKETO), Mr Nick Choi, today (June 30) attended the Canada Hong Kong Week Gala Dinner organised by the Canada Hong Kong Alliance (Toronto) to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the establishment of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) and the 150th anniversary of the confederation of Canada.

Speaking at the opening of the gala dinner, Mr Choi gave a brief account of the economic and social achievements of HKSAR in the past 20 years.

“Hong Kong made remarkable progress in various fronts including economic growth, foreign direct investment, tourist number, fiscal reserve etc. over the past 20 years.  The city also faced many challenges during the period but had overcome all the uphill battles with the can-do spirit of its people as well as the staunch support of the Central Government,” Mr Choi said.

Mr Choi told the audience that the HKSAR Government would continue to seize every opportunity for growth and development in the future.  “The HKSAR Government is investing heavily in infrastructure and other development projects in order to sharpen our competitive edge and strengthen our position as the super-connector between Mainland China and the rest of the world,” Mr Choi added.

In addition, Mr Choi also introduced the upcoming events organised or supported by HKETO to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the establishment of the HKSAR, and invited the guests to join HKETO at those occasions.

“In mid July, a Hong Kong-based performance group, Rhythm & Tempo, will stage two tap dance performances in Toronto while in October, HKETO will organise a business seminar to explore with the local business sector how Canadian businesses can better use the unique advantages of Hong Kong to tap into the opportunities presented by the fast growing Asia Pacific region,” Mr Choi said.

The 2017 Canada Hong Kong Week was kicked off on June 24 with an opening show, continued with roving photo exhibitions, talk show etc. and concluded by the gala dinner.  The gala was attended by around 1 000 guests.
