This year marks the 20th anniversary of the establishment of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR). The Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office (Toronto) (HKETO) sponsors two art exhibitions on Hong Kong artists in Vancouver.
Director of HKETO, Miss Kathy Chan, toured the art exhibition entitled Pacific Crossings: Hong Kong Artists in Vancouver at the Vancouver Art Gallery on 20 April. The exhibition, running from March 4 to May 28,features works of four Hong Kong artists: Paul Chui (徐榕生), Josh Hon (韓偉康), Carrie Koo (顧媚), and David Lam (林鎮輝). The event offers visual insights into the impact of immigration on artistic creations. As a programme run by the gallery’s Institute of Asian Art, the exhibition aims to bring greater visibility to Asian art, increase engagement with Vancouver’s Asian communities, and provide some insight into the art of Hong Kong. HKETO is a major sponsor of the exhibition.
On 21 April, Principal Consultant (Western Canada) of HKETO, Ms. Catherine Yuen, attended the opening reception of the “Tian Tian Xiang Shang” exhibition staged by Hong Kong artist and founder of Zuni Icosahedron (one of the nine major performing arts groups subvented by HKSAR Government), Mr. Danny Yung at Nelson Square. “Tian Tian Xiang Shang” is a well-known Chinese saying encouraging children to work hard and achieve their dreams. It inspired Mr. Yung to create Tian Tian, a cartoon character in 1970s, for adults and kids all around the globe, challenging them to be curious and creative like Tian Tian. The Tian Tian Xiang Shang exhibitions had been held in places including DC Washington, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Chicago, Toronto, Mexico City, Paris, Milan, Beijing, Shanghai, Hong Kong, Taipei, Singapore, Tokyo, etc., and many artists, designers, creative talents and younger generations have participated to create their own Tian Tian figurines.
The exhibition in Vancouver would run from April 22 to May 21 as part of Zuni Icosahedron’s Canada Tour 2017, with workshops and guided tours arranged during the exhibition period. The group put up a “Flee by Night” experimental theatre performance in Toronto in early April. HKETO is a major sponsor of Zuni Icosahedron’s Canada Tour 2017, as part of its programme to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the establishment of HKSAR in Canada.
