The Director of the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office (Toronto), Miss Kathy Chan, attended the Chinese New Year Gala Dinner of the HSBC Bank Canada, which was held on February 7 in Toronto.
Speaking at the gala dinner, Miss Chan first noted that the seamless and professional services of HSBC across the globe serve efficiently and effectively people who call both Canada and Hong Kong homes. “It also serves enterprises which have business interests in the two places, and plays an important role in fostering the trade relations between Hong Kong and Canada,” she added.
Turning to the Hong Kong – Canada relations, Miss Chan said that in the past year, bilateral trade between the two places continued to flourish and Hong Kong has been Canada’s eighth largest merchandise export market.
“We are also glad to see increasing collaboration between incubators/accelerators of the two places to provide more opportunities for promising Canadian start-ups to make use of the super-connector platform of Hong Kong to launch into the massive markets of Mainland China and the rest of Asia,” she said.
“More importantly, we are delighted that Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau visited Hong Kong last September and the investment promotion and protection agreement between Hong Kong and Canada came into force at the same time.” The agreement would enhance the confidence of investors and increase investment flows between the two places.
Miss Chan concluded that 2017 not only celebrates the 150th anniversary of the confederation of Canada, but also marks the 20th anniversary of the establishment of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region. She invited the attendees to join the series of celebration activities that are being planned by HKETO in the year ahead.
