The Director of the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office (Toronto) (HKETO), Miss Kathy Chan, attended the Chinese New Year Gala Dinners held by the Vancouver and Calgary Sections of the Hong Kong Canada Business Association (HKCBA) on February 9 and 10 respectively.
She thanked the two sections for their outstanding efforts to encourage and help businesses to make use of the “super-connector” role of Hong Kong to tap into the Asian and the wider Belt and Road markets.
She looked forward to continuing the close collaboration amongst the HKETO, Hong Kong Trade Development Council and the two Sections to introduce the many advantages of doing business in and via Hong Kong to more members of the local business communities in the coming year.
Miss Chan told the guests of the gala dinners that Hong Kong is an excellent place to do business in the world. “We have a sound common law system, simple and low taxes, a clean and efficient government, and strong connections with the rest of the world.”
“Hong Kong is also an ideal gateway to bridge businesses from around the world to Mainland China. Hong Kong has entered into a special free trade arrangement with Mainland China that guarantees Hong Kong-based companies the most favaourable terms when accessing the massive market of Mainland China”, Miss Chan added.
Miss Chan also told the guests at the Vancouver gala dinner that the HKCBA would hold its National Conference on 2 June in Vancouver. Government representatives and industry players from different sectors would share with participants the latest developments in Hong Kong, and their insights into the various opportunities existing in Asia as well as why and how Hong Kong is your best partner to tap into these opportunities.
The gala dinners in Vancouver and Calgary were well attended by around 200 and 500 local government and business leaders respectively. The dignitaries attending the Vancouver gala dinner included Minister of International Trade of British Columbia The Honourable Teresa Wat, Vancouver Mayor Gregor Robertson and Chinese Deputy Consul-General in Vancouver Kong Weiwei. At the gala dinner in Calgary, Miss Chan was joint by Lieutenant Governor of Alberta The Honourable Lois Mitchell and Mayor of Calgary Naheed Nenshi.
2017 not only celebrates the 150th anniversary of the confederation of Canada, but also marks the 20th anniversary of the establishment of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region. Miss Chan invited the attendees of both gala dinners to join the series of celebration activities that are being planned by HKETO in the year ahead.
