February 4, 2017

The Director of the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office (Toronto) (HKETO), Miss Kathy Chan, attended the Chinese New Year Gala Dinner of the Hong Kong Canada Business Association (HKCBA) Greater Toronto Area (GTA) Section in Toronto on February 4. Miss Chan and Markham Mayor Frank Scarpitti were the honourary co-chairs of the event.

Speaking at the dinner’s opening, Miss Chan first expressed appreciation of HKCBA GTA Section’s outstanding efforts to encourage and help businesses of GTA to make use of the “super-connector” role of Hong Kong to tap into the Asian and the wider Belt and Road markets.

“In the past year, the HKCBA GTA Section continued to demonstrate exceptional commitment, enthusiasm, resourcefulness and professionalism in delivering and achieving its mission to forge ever stronger trade ties between Hong Kong and Canada.  I am most thankful to HKCBA GTA Section’s unfailing support to the work of  HKETO,” Miss Chan said.

“I look forward to continuing the close collaboration amongst HKETO, other Hong Kong family members including the Hong Kong Trade Development Council and Hong Kong Tourism Board, and the HKCBA GTA Section to present the very best of Hong Kong to the GTA business community in the coming year.”

Miss Chan also noted that despite global uncertainties, Hong Kong has maintained its advantages as an excellent place to do business in the world, benefitting from its free economy, sound common law system, simple and low taxes, clean and efficient government, and strong connections with all parts of the world.

“More importantly, Hong Kong can bridge you to Mainland China through a special free trade arrangement that guarantees Hong Kong-based businesses the most favaourable terms when accessing the massive market,” she added.

2017 not only celebrates the 150th anniversary of the confederation of Canada, but also marks the 20th anniversary of the establishment of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region. Miss Chan invited the attendees to join the series of celebration activities that are being planned by HKETO in the year ahead.
