The Director of the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office (Toronto) (HKETO), Miss Kathy Chan, attended the Chinese New Year Gala Dinner of the Hong Kong Canada Business Association (HKCBA) Montreal Section in Montreal on January 31. The dinner was graced by the attendance of the Canadian Federal Minister of International Trade The Honourable François-Philippe Champagne, Chinese Consul General (Montreal) Peng Jing-tao, Chairman of Executive Committee of the City of Montreal Pierre Desrochers, Mayor of Mount-Royal Philippe Roy, Borough Mayor of Saint Laurent Alan DeSousa, as well as around 200 members of the local business community.
Speaking at the gala dinner, Miss Chan noted that in the past year, the HKETO continued to work very closely with HKCBA Montreal Section to encourage and help Quebec businesses, Montreal companies in particular, to make use of the super-connector role of Hong Kong to explore the business opportunities in Asia and the wider Belt and Road markets.
“Hong Kong, with its advantages, including its free economy, sound common law system, simple and low taxes, clean and efficient government and strong connections with all parts of the world, continues to be a valued business partner of the international business community. The free trade arrangement entered into between Hong Kong and Mainland China under the “one country, two systems” principle also provides Hong Kong-based businesses with the most preferential terms when accessing the latter’s massive market”, she said.
Miss Chan further noted that Hong Kong – Canada trade relations had grown from strength to strength in the past year. “We signed an Investment Promotion and Protection Agreement with Canada last February, and the agreement came into force in September when Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau visited Hong Kong. The agreement would enhance investment flows between the two places. We look forward to forging closer ties with Canada in the coming year,” she said.
2017 marks the 150th anniversary of the confederation of Canada, while it is also the 20th anniversary of the establishment of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region. Miss Chan invited the attendees to join the series of celebration activities that are being planned by HKETO in the year ahead.
