Hong Kong and ASEAN sign Free Trade Agreement and Related Investment Agreement

Hong Kong and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) signed a Free Trade Agreement (FTA) and a related Investment Agreement in Pasay City, the Philippines, today (November 12). The agreements will bring about legal certainty and better market access for the trade in goods and services as well as investment protection to Hong Kong. They will also help reduce the restrictions in doing business and expand business opportunities for Hong Kong enterprises, thus creating a more conducive environment for the development of Hong Kong's economy.

CE discusses with APEC leaders on regional economic cooperation

The Chief Executive, Mrs Carrie Lam, had in-depth discussions with the economic leaders at the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) 2017 Economic Leaders' Meeting (AELM) in Da Nang, Vietnam, yesterday (November 11) on ways to consolidate and sustain regional and global economic growth, deal with challenges brought by technology and digital economy, and ensure inclusive development.

SCED: Hong Kong is a staunch supporter of trade and investment liberalisation

Hong Kong bears strong testimony to the benefits of trade and investment liberalisation, and has strong faith that increasing interaction among economies will promote growth and bring enormous benefits, the Secretary for Commerce and Economic Development, Mr Edward Yau, said at the 29th Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Ministerial Meeting in Da Nang, Vietnam, today (November 8).

Hong Kong ranked world's fifth easiest place to do business

Hong Kong ranked the fifth in the World Bank's Doing Business 2018 Report released yesterday (October 31). The Report once again re-affirmed Hong Kong's position as one of the world’s easiest places to do business. The World Bank commends Hong Kong for successful implementation of reform measures to make doing business easier, namely improving the quality of the land administration system by enhancing its reliability and establishing a complaints mechanism.

Hong Kong emerges from Fintech Week as Asian leader

Following the speeches, presentations and panel sessions involving financial technology (Fintech) experts from around the world, the main story emerging from the second annual Hong Kong Fintech Week, which ended on October 27, is that Hong Kong is very much a Fintech leader in Asia, and one that welcomes companies looking to establish themselves in the region.

The Government held the Summit on New Directions for Taxation today (October 23). Attended by more than 400 participants, the Summit is an initiative of the current-term Government in gauging views from stakeholders for formulating forward-looking tax policies and measures for fostering economic development.

The Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office (Toronto) (Toronto ETO), with the support of the Hong Kong Trade Development Council and Hong Kong-Canada Business Association, held a business seminar entitled “Succeeding in Asia and Beyond through Hong Kong” in Toronto, Canada on October 19 (Toronto time) to promote Hong Kong’s unique role as the gateway to Asia and beyond.

Chief Executive unveils inaugural Policy Address

The Chief Executive, Mrs Carrie Lam, today (October 11) delivered her first Policy Address since assuming office on July 1, 2017. In the Policy Address themed "We Connect for Hope and Happiness", the Government, adopting new thinking and a new role, explained the philosophy of governance for various policies and put forward innovative measures with new perspectives to solve economic and livelihood issues of public concern.
